Cruz appointed Sequim Gazette Editor effective December 30, 2024
December 24, 2024 — The Sequim Gazette is pleased to announce the appointment of Kathy Cruz as its new editor, effective Dec. 30. Cruz, who has served as the Olympic Peninsula News Group and Kitsap News Group’s special sections editor for the past 15 months, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the role.
A native Texan and published author, she has years of experience working in major news markets and community journalism, winning 14 Journalist of the Year honors from state press associations and multiple awards for excellence in legal reporting. In 2018, as a contributor for Fort Worth Weekly, she won a First Place award in feature writing from the Association of Alternative News Media for publications with a circulation under 40,000.
Cruz’s promotion follows a year of remarkable contributions to the groups’ special sections, where she has been instrumental in enhancing their quality and breadth of local coverage. Her innovative approach and dedication to journalistic excellence have earned her widespread recognition and respect within the community.
“Kathy has demonstrated exceptional leadership and creativity during her tenure as special sections editor,” said Eran Kennedy, the Sequim Gazette’s publisher. “Her ability to connect with the community and tell compelling stories makes her the perfect fit for this role. We are excited to see her continue to elevate the Gazette as our new editor.”
In her new position, Cruz will oversee the editorial direction of the Gazette, ensuring that it continues to provide comprehensive and engaging coverage of local news, events and issues. She will work closely with the editorial team to maintain the high standards of journalism that readers have come to expect from the Gazette.
“I am honored to take on this new role and lead the talented team at the Sequim Gazette,” Cruz said. “I look forward to building on our successes and continuing to serve the Sequim community with integrity and dedication.”
The Gazette’s interim editor, Matthew Nash, will assist Cruz in the transition over the coming weeks. Nash, who has been with the Gazette for 14 plus years, expressed his confidence in Cruz’s ability to lead the news team.
“Sequim is lucky to have Kathy’s experience, fresh perspective and ability to tap into community voices,” he said. The Gazette staff congratulates Cruz on her new position and looks forward to her leadership in the years to come, Nash said.
